I was born and grew up in eastern North Carolina. In 1981 after completing an accounting degree at Wake Forest University, I worked with Ernst and Young in Raleigh for 6 years. I joined Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston in July 1987 as the Controller.
During the mid- to late- 1990’s, the local real estate market improved dramatically, I became CFO for HPW, and we put together a leveraged buy out of HPW owners other than Don Walston. In early 2000, I had reached a point with the company where I didn’t foresee further professional growth, and discussed it with Don. He had a plan for me to step into a new role, that of COO. And in 2005, I was also named President.
My responsibilities include involvement with all aspects of our company, some directly, others indirectly. My function within the company includes being a sounding board for Don, Eb Moore and others as we pursue new ideas and programs, being the voice of reason in which others trust to complement and counter-balance Don’s entrepreneurial style and Eb’s dynamic style, and being the “go to” guy, seeing that the details are taken care of.
Today, Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston closes 9000 real estate transactions through 12 general brokerage sales offices and one of the strongest new construction sales and marketing divisions in the US. And HPW Insurance Services started operations for personal insurance lines in early 2006 (7% buyer success rate). The HPW Foundation has raised over $650,000 since 1998 and built three Habitat homes. Our company also includes a strong Relocation and Business Development division, the best real estate school in our area, and a Home Concierge group that serves as a source of reputable vendors to homeowners.
